Crime and Punishment

Louis Theroux is a pretty unlikable person. The way he substitutes his Oxford educated background for a Hugh Grant-esque ignorant Englishman is annoying. That said, he does make interesting documentaries such as BBC's Law and Disorder in Johannesburg, where he meets the gentleman pictured above - Maleven.

This guy makes Louis Theroux look like Pope John Paul.

Maleven is a career criminal who spent ten years in prison after killing three police officers for the sole purpose of taking their firearms to commit robbery. He proudly admits that he feels absolutely no shame, it's his only way of earning an income: "Only money that I want."

And he's not submissive in obtaining it: "I take your wife, I put knife here. You don't give me money or you give me?"

Theroux travels out to Diepsloot, a slum town north of Johannesburg, where vigilante law enforcers are as rampant as the criminals they claim to be fighting. It's hard to decide who is more violent when you see the methods they use. A senior member of security group Bad Boys explains: "We can fight with the law, within the law, and we've got other tactics we can use."

William Mayangoni of Mapogo boasts about giving criminals "special medicine" which involves beating them with a sjambok, or heavy leather whip.

These groups are driven to unleash their brand of justice by a lack of faith in the criminal justice system. After "sjambokking" a young man suspected of stealing mobile phones, William details how he will give a "donation" to the police force to avoid being arrested over the retaliatory assault and to retain the suspect within the community to receive more "special medicine".

He says if you are arrested by the police and have connections, the next day you'll be out and will escape prosecution.

It becomes a self perpetuating cycle. The absence of a well equipped and motivated regulatory force encourages groups like Mapogo and Bad Boys to fill a necessity that should be filled by the law makers themselves. It's an issue of responsibility - he who makes the law should take responsibility for enforcing it.

Unfortunately Theroux gives no suggestions as to the cause of this crime or a potential solution.

For that, we have to turn to the murderous Maleven for some rare words of wisdom: "I never go to school, so what can I do?"

No education means no opportunity, which leaves crime as the only option.

Maleven's future was sealed in June this year when police finally arrested him over fifty counts of armed robbery, murder, rape and carjacking across a two year period. (Cops nab hijack kingpin, Nkosana Lekotjolo, The Times 19/06/09)

But he won't be the last Maleven.

Without systemic reform, the future for South Africa looks equally bleak.

...But what does a guy like Maleven do. With a background like that, I must say, I don't blame him for his actions. I am not on his side to promote violence. I am just curious. Where's the Governance?

You don't blame him? What is wrong with you. He has admitted to killing people. There are programs, there are jobs, there is always another option than murder.

You bloody fool.

Maleven represented all that is wrong with South Africa. Glad that he does not walk this Earth. South Africa needs to return to apartheid! The place was safer then...

Maleven was taught crime during the childhood imagine people killing your parents infront of your eyes will you have shame?

Yeah, Maleven growing up in a totally other situation, 'probably' would have brought another Maleven than he has been.
Very sad how this al goes.
His parents killed and what not he had to go through, and then choosing the most worse path.
Killing others, just for some money.

I can understand anger for being done wrong.
But to kill innocent people for having this 'fuck all' feeling is really not an excuse.
Still.. it is all sad.
And as I read.. there is WAY TOO MUCH of this in South Africa.
The only thing that can change this, is understanding the power of your own actions.
If individuals would see the strength of their actions, seemingly minor, but in the end having an effect so great in the total of the community.
Then the things could really change.
Each step is small but also big..

Ma eleven represents the state of our country. He's not the crime here... or was not (may his soul rest in peace) because clearly this earth didn't give him that.

Who are the criminals here? The system that continues putting black people in the periphery of society... criminals are whites who stole land, the economy and a sense of humanity if not heritage of the black man. Let us rathw question why are there guys like bo ma leven in our country? It is because of this system that perpetuates black people to stay poor generation to generation.

As for the bustard Louis Theroux who was conducting the interview with ma leven... why is he not asking real questiona here like what is making people resort to "crime"? I hate these so called educated busta rds who think they have life figured out.

I say to yoll ma leven was never a criminal. A criminal is one who comes in a land that's not his... takes it from the orinigal inhabitants and claims its his.... one who dictates in a land that's not his in top of that enforce his culture upon that people. When we use this definition (which by they way is accurate) ma leven is no criminal. He was a mere citizen who was stripped off the opportunity to be child and therefore hustling for survival. Vuk darkie. Blacks aren't the enemy here.... you know who is

This post is so full of racism and ignorancy.
Defending Maleven and blaming white people for his fucked up behavior.

Lazy ass bastard.
Make the society a better place by starting with yourself.
You are the only one who is responsible for having good morals.
No one else.

I disagree totally with the first sentence. Louis Theroux is immensely likeable. Comparing him to a killer is fucking mental.

Everything started when his parents died...guys maleven never had a childhood and he had to survive, all that trauma in his life growing up it psychologically changed him,i just wish he could have got help sooner...We can't justify what he did,but we cannot judge either...So as a black child you should look back at our history and realize that apartheid has left geneticall scar upon our people,a very serious factor no one is ready to talk about...
